Ocotal

Ocotal is a beautiful city in Nicaragua, Central America of about 38,000. Ocotal is located 13 miles (21 kilometers) south of the Honduras border on the Pan American Highway. The city, which is the capital of the department of Nueva Segovia, is in a pretty valley, in the middle of mountains, rivers, forests, and clouds. However, this beautiful area is economically depressed. Nicaragua is generally considered to be the poorest country in the Americas. This information was copied with permission of the site's author from Helping the Poor in Ocotal, Nicaraguawhich is a site about Ocotal and a non-profit micro-credit there for women who own micro-businesses, such as tortilla-making or a tiny convenience store in the house. Ocotal is twinned with Swindon, UK, and with Hartford, Connecticut, USA.
