North Amherst, Massachusetts

North Amherst is a census-designated place and village located in the town of Amherst in Hampshire County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 6,019. There are several large apartment complexes in North Amherst, housing mostly students of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst along with low-income families.

Geography

North Amherst is located at 42°24'22" North, 72°31'16" West (42.406192, -72.521217). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,019 people, 1,915 households, and 813 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,101.4/km² (2,856.1/mi²). There are 1,947 housing units at an average density of 356.3/km² (923.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 75.76% White, 4.44% African American, 0.25% Native American, 13.09% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, 3.11% from other races, and 3.14% from two or more races. 6.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,915 households out of which 25.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.9% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 57.5% are non-families. 22.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 2.99. In the village the population is spread out with 14.2% under the age of 18, 50.4% from 18 to 24, 19.7% from 25 to 44, 10.8% from 45 to 64, and 4.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 105.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.3 males. The median income for a household in the village is $28,063, and the median income for a family is $43,423. Males have a median income of $37,202 versus $29,079 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,336. 33.6% of the population and 12.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.5% of those under the age of 18 and 2.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
