Normanton, West Yorkshire
Normanton
is a
town
in
West Yorkshire
,
England
, lying north east of
Wakefield
and south west of
Castleford
. Normanton was originally surrounded by a
moat
. A
grammar school
was founded in Normanton in the
1590s
, but the town remained very small until it became the focus of several
railway lines
in the mid-
nineteenth century
and
coal mining
was begun. The town is one of the few small places in
Yorkshire
to retain a very distinctive accent. Locals still talk of a "Normanton accent" as opposed to one from
Wakefield
or other surrounding towns.
