Noatak National Preserve

The Noatak National Preserve is a 26,587 km² (6,569,904 acre) wilderness area in northwestern Alaska, in the United States. The preserve contains the largest mountain-ringed river basin, the Noatak River basin, in the United States that is as yet unaffected by human activities. The basin is a transition zone for plants and animals between arctic and subarctic environments. The basin was proclaimed a United States national monument in 1978 and a national preserve in 1980. The preserve is just north of the arctic circle. NPS web site
