Nipponized English Terms

Terms here are terms used by the Japanese, which are actually Japanese pronounciations of English terms (so-called Engrish), used in Japan, by Japanese, in Japanese speech, language. Many often abbrievate English phrases, by taking the first syllable of each word e.g. Sekuhara (Sex-ual Hara-ssment)
''Gairaigo (外来語) is Japanese for "loan word" or "borrowed word," and indicates a transliteration (or "transvocalization") into Japanese. In particular, the word usually refers to a modern Japanese word of foreign origin that was not borrowed from or via Chinese. (Some Sanskrit terms such as Dhyana -> Zen'' have come via Chinese)

  • Beddo - A western style bed, as opposed to a futon.
  • Bēsubōru - Baseball
  • Bura (ぶら) is Japanized term for the English word bra.
  • Burezā (ブレザー) is Japanese for the English word blazer, as well as a term for a Japanese school uniform that includes that garment. It usually has buttons down the front and a vest under it with a white collared shirt.

  • Dabingu - Dubbing
  • Desuku (デスク) a person who sits at a desk.
  • Don mai - 'Don't mind'
  • Dorama (ドラマ)is the Nihonized term for the English word drama.
  • Dori dori (ドリドリ) is a Japanese word meaning "drifting", in the sense of a car in the controlled skid used in drift racing. It originates from the term dorifuto.
  • Dorifuto (ドリフト), is the 'Engrish' pronunciation of "drifting".

E

  • Eakon - Air con(ditioning)
  • Ecchi is the Japanese pronounciation of the word/name of the letter H.
  • Engai-ringu - Engagement ring.
  • Ero (エロ) is derived from the word erotica, and represents the same
    • Ero-ero (エロエロ) see ero

  • Foku - Folk music (please note, this refers to western style folk music not Japanese!)
  • Fōku - Fork
  • Furaidopoteto (フライドポテト) Chips (UK) or French Fries (USA) or Fries. Derived from "fried potato"

  • gadoman - guard(man)
  • Guro (ーグロ) is the shortened form of ero-guro, see ero-guro

H

  • Ecchi is the Japanese pronounciation of the word/name of the letter H.
  • Hankachi Handkerchief
  • hansuto hun(ger) str(ike)

  • Lolicon (ロリコン) seerorikon

M

  • Manshon - a flat (UK) or apartment (US); derived from 'Mansion'
  • Moningukoru (モーニングコール) - Wake up call, a "morning call"

O

  • On-za-rokku - Whisky with ice ('On the Rocks')

  • sukebo - Skateboard
  • sumato (スマート)- Smart (can also mean slim)

  • tarento - TV personality/celebrity (from 'talent')
  • Tēburu - Western style table

  • Wanpisu - A suit ('one piece')

Y

  • yan egu - young executive

Gairago of Non-English Origin

  • Arubaito - Temporary work, from the German Arbeit meaning 'work'.
  • Abeku - A hotel where lovers elope, from French Avec meaning 'with'.
  • Enerugisshu - from the German energetisch
  • Hisuteri - from the German Hysterie meaning Hysteria
  • Pan - Bread, probably from Portuguese.
