Nintendo Stars Catalogue

The Nintendo Stars Catalogue is a "loyalty" or "reward" scheme employed by Nintendo of Europe. The principle is simple: each game or item of hardware included in the scheme (a list of which is on the Nintendo Europe website, and encompasses most of the firstparty software and hardware range) comes with a voucher with a value in "Stars" attached to it. Entering a code from that card on the NoE website adds those stars to the user's total; these stars can then be redeemed for various items. Additionally, materials relating to the game (typically wallpapers, Winamp skins, and music/sound effect files) are made available for download. A typical game is worth 250 stars; a console 500. Bonus stars may be accumulated by contributing to the NoE website's forums, or participating in surveys. Initially, stars could only be redeemed for downloadable content; for example, additional wallpapers and screensavers. However, limited stocks of products for home delivery have since been added, such as signed posters, games, soundtracks, and free, subsidised, or pre-release consoles and accessories (most recently a bundle including the Nintendo DS, for 1000 stars plus 129.99). The site is notoriously overwhelmed by traffic once these items become available, often causing users difficulty in placing orders.
