Nicky CampbellNicholas Andrew Argyll Campbell (born Edinburgh, Scotland on April 10 1961) is one of the UK's most respected radio and television presenters, and one of the few to make a smooth transition from pop disc jockey to accepted 'serious' broadcaster. After graduating from Aberdeen University with a degree in history, Campbell toyed with ideas of becoming an actor and got involved in commercial production for radio in order to gain his Equity card. He worked at Northsound Radio in Aberdeen from 1981 to 1986 hosting the breakfast show for most of that time. He joined London station Capital Radio. He joined BBC Radio 1 in 1987 and quickly established himself as the smooth-talking, clever presenter of a late-evening music and interview show which he named Into The Night. For a pop station this was remarkably and admirably grown-up, with intellectual competitions combined with a highbrow guest roster, including political leaders. He interviewed John Major in 1991 after Conservative Party chairman Chris Patten recommended the show to the Prime Minister when Radio 1 sent an invitation to No.10. He was also regularly joined by Frankie Howerd in the last years of the comedian's life. Campbell left this slot and the network as a whole in 1993 to care for his sick wife. At the same time, he was presenting Wheel Of Fortune on ITV. When his marriage collapsed, Campbell returned to Radio 1 as host of the teatime and then afternoon slots, before quitting again to join sister station BBC Radio 5 Live, the news and sport network. He presented the mid-morning programme on 5 Live before moving to his current breakfast slot. He also presents BBC consumer show Watchdog and a newer, interactive programme called Now You're Talking. Campbell, who was adopted as a four-day old baby, traced his real parents (who hailed from Dublin) when he reached his 30s. In 2004, he co-wrote a book (with his newly-found half-sister) about the experience. He is married to his second wife, journalist Tina Ritchie, and the couple have four daughters.
