Ngati Kahungunu

The Ngati Kahungunu iwi, one of the largest tribes of New Zealand Maori, is based in Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay. Its membership recorded at the 2001 census was 51,552, including Ngti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa, Ngti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, Ngti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, Ngti Kahungunu region unspecified, Ngti Kahungunu ki Whanganui a Orotu, Ngti Kahungunu ki Tamatea, and Ngti Kahungunu ki Tamakinui a Rua. That information is from Statistics New Zealand. Information obtained from Statistics New Zealand may be freely used, reproduced, or quoted unless otherwise specified. In all cases Statistics New Zealand must be acknowledged as the source. The tribe experienced a civil war in December 1865 and January 1866, which historians treat as part of the East Cape War.
