Newfound Gap
Newfound Gap
(elevation 5048 ft/1539 m), is a gap (
mountain pass
) in the southern
Appalachian Mountains
in the
US
. Bordering
Tennessee
and
North Carolina
, the middle of the state line runs through the gap, as does
U.S. Highway 441
, on its way through the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
. It is located about a half-hour's
drive
from both
Gatlinburg
and
Cherokee
. The
Appalachian Trail
also passes across the gap, and the
parking lot
there is used by many
hikers
. In the
winter
, Newfound Gap often receives heavy
snow
, much more so than the lower areas surrounding it. Because the
National Park Service
does not use any
deicing
chemicals
within the
national parks
,
snowplows
do all of the work. Being a
U.S. highway
, the gap is open most of the winter to non-
commercial
traffic
.
