Newfield, New YorkNewfield is a town located in Tompkins County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,108. The towns name is derived from the many unoccupied tracts of land that were once in the town. The Town of Newfield is in the southwest part of the county. History During the Depression many abandoned farms were turned into conservation lands. Geography The south and west town lines are the border of Schuyler County, New York. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 152.7 km² (59.0 mi²). 152.5 km² (58.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.15% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,108 people, 2,052 households, and 1,352 families residing in the town. The population density is 33.5/km² (86.8/mi²). There are 2,203 housing units at an average density of 14.4/km² (37.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.06% White, 1.08% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,052 households out of which 34.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.98. In the town the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.7 males. The median income for a household in the town is $36,693, and the median income for a family is $43,147. Males have a median income of $29,353 versus $27,064 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,735. 9.1% of the population and 6.9% of families are below the poverty line.
