. The newspaper was unsuccessful until it was purchased by
Joseph Pulitzer

1883
.
Nellie Bly
, a
journalist
on the title became the first
investigative journalist
, often working undercover. As a publicity stunt for the paper inspired by
Around the World in Eighty Days
, she travelled around the planet in 72 days. In
1896
, the newspaper became the first to launch a
color supplement
. It then joined a circulation battle with the
New York Journal
. In
1911
, Joseph Pulitzer died, passing control of the title to his son. The paper published the first
crossword puzzle
in
1913
, but declined in popularity until it merged with the
Evening Telegram
in 1931 as the
New York World-Telegram
.
