New York State School Of Industrial And Labor Relations

The New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University was established in 1944 (first students admitted 1945) as the world's first school for college–level study in industrial and labor relations. It is a statutory college of the State University of New York (SUNY). Forces leading to the creation of the School came from leaders in American business, industry, labor, government, and education, who felt that a new type of school was needed that focused on issues involving the American workplace. Cornell, with its dual Ivy League and state university heritage (see Cornell University for a listing of its state–supported and privately–endowed units), seemed to be an ideal place, among such aforementioned leaders, for a school that specialized in workplace issues. The School is divided into six departments: Collective Bargaining, Labor Law, and Labor History; Human Resource Studies; International and Comparative Labor Relations; Labor Economics; Organizational Behavior; and Social Statistics. The School offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Science; Master of Industrial and Labor Relations (offered both on the main Ithaca, New York campus as well as in New York City); Master of Professional Studies (designed for those who are already practitioners in the field of industrial and labor relations); Master of Science (designed for those who plan on pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy degree), and Doctor of Philosophy. It can be noted that the School offers the United States' only full four–year undergraduate programs in industrial and labor relations.
