New Frontier Party

The Shinshinto (新進党, "New Frontier Party") was a former Japanese political party. The party was left-wing and social-democratic yet it contained significant liberal and even conservative elements. It is now defunct. The Shinshinto, or New Frontier Party, was founded in 1994 by former prime minister Kaifu Toshiki, and immediately became one of the members of the ruling anti-LDP coalition led by Hosokawa Morihiro. The party helped the government, led by the New Japan Party and the Japan Renewal Party, control the government until it collapsed in 1996. In 1995, former coalition leader Hata Tsutomu was ousted by Ichiro Ozawa who led the party until its dissolution. The party was dissolved in 1998, and its remnants collated into several tiny parties, including the Liberal Party, Reform Club, New Peace Party, and New Fraternity Party. These parties eventually all merged into the liberal Democratic Party of Japan. This party was extremely varied in its membership, a result of the broad coalition that formed it. The party, as said above, is now defunct. Most of its former members had joined the Liberal Party (1998), which in turn joined the Democratic Party.
