Nero Digital

Nero Digital is a software product that uses MPEG-4-conforming compression technology, with support for two MPEG-4 video coding algorithms and two forms of MPEG-4 AAC audio. Nero Digital was developed by Nero AG of Germany, and Ateme of France. It implements codecs that conform to the MPEG-4 ISO/IEC standard (except for the way it handles chapters and subtitles, but these aspects may be changed in the future to use ISO/IEC MPEG-4 standard technology as well, due to requests on the Doom9 forum). Nero Digital also uses the ISO/IEC standard *.mp4 file format container, unlike other MPEG-4 based codecs that use the *.avi or *.asf container. Nero Digital offers two different video codecs, and two different audio codecs. All four (and also the file format they are stored in) are part of the MPEG-4 ISO/IEC standard. The following codecs are:
  • ASP (one of about 20 profiles defined in MPEG-4 Part 2)
  • AVC (also known as MPEG-4 Part 10 or H.264)
  • HE AAC (also known as aacPlus, defined in MPEG-4 Part 3)
  • LC AAC (another codec defined in MPEG-4 Part 3)
