Naumburg

Naumburg (pop. 30,100) (2004) is a town in Germany, on the Saale River. It is approximately 60 km southwest of Leipzig, 50 km south-southwest of Halle, and 40 km north-northeast of Jena, in the westernmost portion of Saxony. Its latitude-longitude coordinates are 51.16 N and 11.80 E (decimal degrees). It is in the district of Burgenlandkreis, and in the Bundesland of Saxony-Anhalt, formerly a part of East Germany. Naumburg is at least 1,000 years old. A castle (Schönburg) overlooks the town and the Saale River. The town is in a wine-growing region, with numerous vineyards in the surrounding area. One of the most significant composers for the organ in Renaissance Germany, Elias Ammerbach, was born in Naumburg in 1530.
