Munich International AirportMunich International Airport, named Franz Josef Strau International Airport (Strau is often spelled Strauss in English) (German Franz-Josef-Strau-Flughafen) is the airport located 28 km northeast of Munich, Germany, and is a hub for Lufthansa and Star Alliance partner airlines. It began operations in 1992, replacing the former international Airport in Mnchen-Riem and has the IATA airport code MUC, and its ICAO airport code is EDDM. As Lufthansa's home base at Frankfurt International Airport is heavily saturated with traffic and has capacity limits, cities with large frequencies are served through Munich Franz Josef Strau airport as well as Frankfurt International. The airport was named after Franz Josef Strau, a post WWII German politician with interest in the aviation industry and infrastructure. The full name is quite uncommon, even the airport authority is only named "Flughafen Mnchen Gesellschaft". In the Munich area, most people prefer the term "Flughafen Mnchen" (Munich Airport), sometimes "Flughafen Mnchen II" or simply MUC. Munich city center can be reached by the S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 which take approxiametly forty minutes and cost about 8 Euro one way. Daily and tourist tickets may be the better choice. Taxi rides to downtown Munich cost about 50 Euro and can result in traffic jams. Car rental for Munich downtown destinations is not recommended. Public transport in Munich is widely available and reliable. Smaller towns Freising and Erding are in reach of a taxi (15 minutes, 18 Euro). Many visit the historic town of Freising on quick stopover (from 2 hours) for people who want to see smaller Bavarian towns (Travellers go by taxi to Freising Marienplatz). There is also a scheduled bus line 635 to Freising. The Munich Airport Center is situated between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. It is both a shopping mall and a business center with conference facilities. There is also the Airbru restaurant with its home-brewed Beer, which offers Bavarian style food with a slight Italian influence. Beer price is 2 Euro for 0.5 litres. The shopping mall also offers a supermarket and a pharmacy. In June 2003, Terminal 2 was finished, housing Star Alliance partners exclusively.
