Muhlenberg County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 31,839.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,242 km² (479 mi²). 1,230 km² (475 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.98% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 31,839 people, 12,357 households, and 9,057 families residing in the county. The population density is 26/km² (67/mi²). There are 13,675 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.19% White, 4.65% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,357 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.70% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.70% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.90. In the county the population is spread out with 22.60% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $28,566, and the median income for a family is $33,513. Males have a median income of $29,952 versus $18,485 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,798. 19.70% of the population and 15.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.00% of those under the age of 18 and 17.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
