Mre

Mre is formally a bishopric which geographically consists of Mre og Romsdal county, Norway, and has its bishop residing, and cathedral located, in the county administrative center, Molde. The bishopric was established in 1983, when Sunnmre was transferred from Bjrgvin bishopric in the south, and Romsdal and Nordmre from Nidaros bishopric in the north to form the new one. As of 2005, the bishop of Mre is Odd Bondevik. The bishopric's name Mre is actually the result of a compromise between its three main regions, where Sunnmre, with almost one half of the population, would accept that the bishop be located in the geographical center of the bishopric, Molde (in Romsdal), if that region's name (Romsdal) be excluded from the name of the bishopric. Informally, the name Mre has sometimes been used to denote the entire county of Mre og Romsdal. In contrast to this, however, the ambiguous designation mring—"person from Mre"—is used strictly about people from Nordmre or Sunnmre, excluding the people from Romsdal (while, consequently, romsdaling—"person from Romsdal"— is used about the latter).
