Mount Pleasant, New YorkMount Pleasant is a town located in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 43,221. Mount Pleasant contains three villages: Briarcliff Manor (shared with the Town of Ossining), Pleasantville, and Sleepy Hollow (formerly called North Tarrytown). Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 84.7 km² (32.7 mi²). 71.7 km² (27.7 mi²) of it is land and 12.9 km² (5.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.26% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 43,221 people, 13,737 households, and 10,522 families residing in the town. The population density is 602.4/km² (1,560.5/mi²). There are 13,985 housing units at an average density of 194.9/km² (504.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 84.25% White, 5.07% African American, 0.24% Native American, 3.26% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 5.02% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 14.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 13,737 households out of which 38.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.0% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% are non-families. 18.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.30. In the town the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 103.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.1 males. The median income for a household in the town is $81,072, and the median income for a family is $96,403. Males have a median income of $60,761 versus $41,023 for females. The per capita income for the town is $35,468. 4.9% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.2% of those under the age of 18 and 3.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
