Mount Edgecumbe, Alaska

Mount Edgecumbe, Alaska is the name of a long dormant volcano located on Kruzov Island, at 57 3' N; 135 46' W. It is 970 m (3,182 feet) at its summit.

History

It was named by Captain Cook in 1778, probably for George, Earl of Edgecumbe.

Eruptions

In 1974, a prankster ignited several old tyres in the crater, convincing nearby residents of Sitka, Alaska the volcano had awakened.
