Mount Clemens is a city located in Macomb County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 17,312.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.9 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.9 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 17,312 people, 7,073 households, and 3,854 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,583.9/km² (4,107.0/mi²). There are 7,546 housing units at an average density of 690.4/km² (1,790.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.79% White, 19.61% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 2.59% from two or more races. 2.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,073 households out of which 24.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.2% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.5% are non-families. 39.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.99. In the city the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 107.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $37,856, and the median income for a family is $50,518. Males have a median income of $41,005 versus $27,896 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,741. 14.1% of the population and 10.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.1% of those under the age of 18 and 11.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
