Mount Carmel is a borough located in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 6,390.

Geography

Mount Carmel is located at 40°47'47" North, 76°24'44" West (40.796447, -76.412231). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,390 people, 3,035 households, and 1,678 families residing in the borough. The population density is 3,738.2/km² (9,655.6/mi²). There are 3,629 housing units at an average density of 2,123.0/km² (5,483.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.56% White, 0.06% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,035 households out of which 21.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.8% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.7% are non-families. 41.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 24.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.10 and the average family size is 2.86. In the borough the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 25.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.6 males. The median income for a household in the borough is $22,168, and the median income for a family is $35,217. Males have a median income of $28,168 versus $20,595 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $14,858. 18.2% of the population and 14.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.1% of those under the age of 18 and 15.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
