Mount AgungMount Agung is the most sacred mountain in Bali. This volcano last erupted in March, 1963 and the lava flows missed, sometimes by mere yards, the Mother Temple of Besakih, which is located on the slopes of this important mountain. The saving of the temple is regarded by the Balinese people as miraculous and a signal from the gods that they wished to demonstrate their power but not destroy the monument the Balinese faithful had erected. However, many people were killed and a number of villages were destroyed in this eruption. Mount Agung (3,148 meters; 10,308 feet) is at the left in this NASA image; Mount Batur, or what remains of it, is to the right of center; on the far right is Mount Bratan. This view is looking to the south west. Full details available on the image page. External link nodak.edu Agung, Mount Agung, Mount
