Moultrie County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 14,287. Its county seat is Sullivan, Illinois ⁶.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 892 km² (344 mi²). 869 km² (336 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.57% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 14,287 people, 5,405 households, and 3,978 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (43/mi²). There are 5,743 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.91% White, 0.20% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,405 households out of which 33.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.30% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.03. In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $40,084, and the median income for a family is $46,655. Males have a median income of $35,470 versus $21,168 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,562. 7.80% of the population and 5.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.90% of those under the age of 18 and 7.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
