Motley County, TexasMotley County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 1,426. Its county seat is Matador6. Motley County is named for Junius William Mottley, a physician, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, who died in the Battle of San Jacinto. The reason the county name differs is due to the fact that the bill creating the county misspelled Mottley's name. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,564 km² (990 mi²). 2,562 km² (989 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water. Adjacent counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,426 people, 606 households, and 435 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (1/mi²). There are 839 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.38% White, 3.51% Black or African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 6.31% from other races, and 1.89% from two or more races. 12.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 606 households out of which 26.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.82. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 21.10% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 23.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 101.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $28,348, and the median income for a family is $33,977. Males have a median income of $25,395 versus $13,333 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,584. 19.40% of the population and 13.90% of families are below the poverty line.
