Morehead City is a town located in Carteret County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,691.

Geography

Morehead City is located at 34°43'40" North, 76°44'48" West (34.727700, -76.746748). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²). 13.2 km² (5.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.89% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,691 people, 3,597 households, and 1,985 families residing in the town. The population density is 582.3/km² (1,507.6/mi²). There are 4,296 housing units at an average density of 325.2/km² (842.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 81.71% White, 13.98% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.13% from other races, and 1.72% from two or more races. 2.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,597 households out of which 23.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.9% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.8% are non-families. 39.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.73. In the town the population is spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.3 males. The median income for a household in the town is $28,737, and the median income for a family is $39,290. Males have a median income of $26,852 versus $21,995 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,138. 14.6% of the population and 12.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.7% of those under the age of 18 and 12.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
