Montevideo, Minnesota

Montevideo is a city in Chippewa County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,346. It is the county seat of Chippewa County6. It is located on the banks of the Minnesota and Chippewa rivers and is surrounded by spectacular bluffs. During the 1700s, Europeans established a fur-trading post near the rivers and traded with Native Americans in the area. Later, Montevideo became an agricultural center. Montevideo’s sister city is Montevideo, Uruguay. In 1949 a statue of Jos Artigas, Uruguay's leader of independence, was given to the Minnesota community by Uruguayan citizens. Each year Montevideo celebrates Fiesta Days in honor of its association with its sister city.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.8 km² (4.5 mi²). 11.6 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.10% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,346 people, 2,353 households, and 1,444 families residing in the city. The population density is 459.7/km² (1,190.5/mi²). There are 2,551 housing units at an average density of 219.4/km² (568.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.10% White, 0.11% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 2.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,353 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% are non-families. 34.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.89. In the city the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $32,447, and the median income for a family is $44,706. Males have a median income of $30,838 versus $19,013 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,025. 10.1% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.2% of those under the age of 18 and 8.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
