Monroe, ConnecticutMonroe is a town located in Fairfield County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 19,247. The current first selectman is Tony Nunn. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 68.2 km² (26.3 mi²). 67.7 km² (26.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,247 people, 6,481 households, and 5,346 families residing in the town. The population density is 284.4/km² (736.5/mi²). There are 6,601 housing units at an average density of 97.5/km² (252.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.87% White, 1.20% African American, 0.08% Native American, 1.52% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 2.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,481 households out of which 42.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.0% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.5% are non-families. 14.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.96 and the average family size is 3.31. In the town the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $85,000, and the median income for a family is $92,514. Males have a median income of $61,109 versus $41,572 for females. The per capita income for the town is $34,161. 2.6% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.7% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
