Minnewaukan is a city located in Benson County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 318. It is the county seat of Benson County.

Geography

Minnewaukan is located at 48°4'17" North, 99°15'2" West (48.071271, -99.250562). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 318 people, 148 households, and 87 families residing in the city. The population density is 454.7/km² (1,157.0/mi²). There are 199 housing units at an average density of 284.6/km² (724.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.16% White, 0.00% African American, 9.75% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 2.83% from two or more races. 1.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 148 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% are married couples living together, 3.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% are non-families. 37.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.83. In the city the population is spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 107.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $27,250, and the median income for a family is $37,000. Males have a median income of $30,833 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,076. 8.5% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.2% of those under the age of 18 and 3.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
