Mills County, TexasMills County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 5,151. Its county seat is Goldthwaite6. Mills County is named for John T. Mills, a justice of the Texas Supreme Court. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,942 km² (750 mi²). 1,938 km² (748 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water. There are 2,691 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.24% White, 1.26% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 7.73% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 13.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,001 households out of which 27.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% are married couples living together, 7.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.90. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 4.70% from 18 to 24, 20.50% from 25 to 44, 26.10% from 45 to 64, and 23.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 102.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $30,579, and the median income for a family is $37,519. Males have a median income of $25,933 versus $20,076 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,915. 18.40% of the population and 12.70% of families are below the poverty line.
