Michigan State Highway 5Michigan State Highway 5, or M-5, is in part a relic of old U.S. Highway 16 in the metro Detroit are of the U.S. state of Michigan. This highway is in fact the Grand River Avenue in parts of Farmington Hills, Michigan, Redford Township, Michigan, and northwestern Detroit. It runs generally from the west-northwest to east-south-east and terminates on Interstate 96, which made most of old US 16 superfluous as a highway designation. It also contains a cutoff section of freeway originally intended to be part of Interstate 96, and that in fact was designated as Interstate 96 until the Interstate was rerouted to the more southerly course of the Schoolcraft Freeway. This segment of freeway feeds westward into Interstate 96 at its junction with Interstate 275 and Interstate 696. In 2002, M-5 was extended northward of the Interstate 96/275/696 split as the Haggerty Connector, a short freeway extending to Pontiac Trail, a suburban road in Commerce Township in 'rural' Oakland County, Michigan. Although it points in the direction of Interstate 75 as if it were a likely extension of Interstate 275, it is unlikely to be built much farther north than it now goes because any northward path would cross a lake-studded countryside with very rich property values; the most desirable residential properties in Michigan are typically on lakes, and any freeway would desecrate the recreational value of such property. 005
