Michigan State Highway 14 Old 14 (Wayne County, MI) Michigan State Highway 14, or M-14, is a 22.54 mile east-west highway in southeastern Michigan. It is entirely freeway, connecting Interstate 94 (access only to and from the west) on the northwest side of Ann Arbor to Interstate 96, to and from which it feeds to and from Detroit at its eastern terminus (where it also meets Interstate 275) on the boundary between the city of Livonia and Plymouth Township in northwest Wayne County. M-14 began as a northside bypass of Ann Arbor and a connector of Interstate 94 and U.S. Highway 23 to and from Flint and points to the north. Then M-14 east of Ann Arbor was largely surface road, Plymouth Road, connecting to Grand River Road, the former U.S. Highway 16 in western Detroit. Once Michigan completed Interstate 96, the Jeffries Freeway, in greater Detroit, supplanting all of M-14 east of Livonia, the state extended the freeway to the older freeway section of M-14, taking the designation M-14 from the surface road, which devolved to county or town maintenance. Although M-14 is freeway, it has two sharp turns north of Ann Arbor and some non-standard interchanges, so it cannot assume an Interstate designation. It is heavily traveled as a connector between Interstate 94 toward southwestern Michigan and to the freeway system of the northeast and northwest suburbs of Detroit. Despite not meeting Interstate standards and a lack of interest by the MDOT, unofficial speculation persists that M-14 might be designated as Interstate 394 in the future. External links 014
