Mew (ミュウ Myū) is a fictional Psychic-type Pokmon that was discovered at the beginning of Pokmon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow in the Amazon Rainforest, according to a scientists' journals in Cinnabar Mansion. Since this Pokmon was so rare, scientists attempted to clone it, but the experiment went wrong and resulted in the creation of Mewtwo. According to the diaries on Cinnabar, Mew wound up somehow giving birth to Mewtwo, although it is possible that this was a metaphor for Mew being the subject they were trying to clone.

Name Origin

Mew's concept is supposedly based off a house cat. The word mew referrs to a sound made by a small feline.

Pokdex descriptions

  • Red/Blue Pokdex description: So rare that it is still said to be a mirage by many experts. Only a few people have seen it worldwide!
  • Yellow Pokdex description: When viewed through a microscope, this Pokmon's short, fine, delicate hair is seen.
  • Gold Pokdex description: Apparently, it appears only to those people who are pure of heart and have a strong desire to see it.
  • Silver Pokdex description: Its DNA is said to contain the genetic codes of all Pokmon, so it can use all kinds of techniques.
  • Crystal Pokdex description: Because it can learn any move, some people began research to see if it is the ancestor of all Pokmon.

Capturing Mew

In the games, this Pokmon is nearly impossible to get (as is noted here). Because of this, many players turn to cheating devices such as a Gameshark in order to own this rare and powerful Pokmon. The only official means of capturing Mew in the American version is to receive one from Nintendo personnel at special events called Pokconventions where they are handed out to the trainers that come. In Pokmon Emerald, Mew can be caught on a new island called World's Edge Island. To get there, the player needs a special ticket from Nintendo. Then, the Mew must be chased around the island until it is cornered, at which point it will fight. It is at level 30. Mew can be captured in Pokmon Red, Blue, and Yellow using the "Mew glitch", which is detailed in a guide on the IGN Pokmon Red cheats page. There is currently no known way to catch Mew without using this glitch or a cheating device. Due to Mew's rarity, it is likely one of the most often "cloned", or duplicated, Pokmon, particularly if the person doing the cloning cannot obtain another Mew through any other means.

Mew in Super Smash Bros.

Mew makes a cameo appearance in Super Smash Bros. and in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It has a small chance of coming out of a Pok Ball item. In both games, Mew appears, says "Mew" and flies away. In Super Smash Bros., it is surrounded by sparkles. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, it flies away with sparkles and a clear bubble surrounding it — this is probably a reference to Pokmon Snap. The person who threw the Pok Ball containing Mew gets a point bonus at the end of the battle.

Mew's History

In the new Pokemon 2005 movie (see external links), the backdrop revolves around Mew's mysterious history and how this extremely rare pokemon came to be so powerful. Also, rumor has it that Mew has an evolved form which will make its first-appearance in the new said 2005 movie.
