The city is situated on the boundary between Macomb County and St. Clair County, with approximately half of the city in each county. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.61% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,129 people, 457 households, and 296 families residing in the city. The population density is 389.2/km² (1,005.6/mi²). There are 476 housing units at an average density of 164.1/km² (424.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.25% White, 0.71% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 457 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% are non-families. 30.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.09. In the city the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $41,705, and the median income for a family is $52,679. Males have a median income of $41,932 versus $27,019 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,983. 10.0% of the population and 7.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.5% of those under the age of 18 and 15.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
