Meknes

Meknes is a city in northern Morocco 130 kilometres from the capital Rabat and 60 kilometres from Fes. It is served by the A2 expressway between the mentioned cities. Meknes started its life in the 8th century as a Kasbah or fort. In the 10th century, a town grew around the fortress with the settlement of a Berber tribe called Maknassa. Meknes saw its golden age following the accession to the throne of Sultan of Morocco Moulay Ismail (1672 - 1727), who made the town his imperial capital.
