Massillon is a city located in Stark County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 31,325.

Geography

Massillon is located at 40°47'43" North, 81°31'22" West (40.795270, -81.522896). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 43.7 km² (16.9 mi²). 43.4 km² (16.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.83% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 31,325 people, 12,677 households, and 8,328 families residing in the city. The population density is 722.1/km² (1,870.3/mi²). There are 13,567 housing units at an average density of 312.7/km² (810.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.18% White, 9.39% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,677 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.8% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 29.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.96. In the city the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $32,734, and the median income for a family is $41,058. Males have a median income of $32,021 versus $22,327 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,633. 10.7% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
