Massachusetts State Highway 2

Massachusetts State Highway 2, always referred to simply as Route 2, is a major East-West state highway in Massachusetts. Along with Route 9 and Route 20 to the South, these highways are the main alternatives to the Massachusetts Turnpike/I-90 toll highway. Route 2 runs the entire length of Massachusetts, beginning at the New York border, where is connects with New York State Highway 2. It proceeds east on a winding, scenic path through the Berkshire mountains to Williamstown and North Adams. It connects briefly with Interstate 91 at an interchange near Greenfield and becomes a divided highway about 15 miles east of Greenfield (though not always up to Interstate standards). It continues through Gardner and Leominster to Boston's outer and inner belts, Interstate 495 and Interstate 95/Route 128. From there Route 2 is an eight lane limited access highway until Exit 60, where it narrows without warning to four lanes. Exit 61 leads directly to the large parking garage at the MBTA Alewife Station. The freeway ends at a traffic light intersection with U.S. Highway 3 and Route 16 in Cambridge; Route 2 continues to the Boston Public Garden. 002
