Mandan, North Dakota

Mandan is a city located in Morton County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 16,718. It is the county seat of Morton County.

Geography

Mandan is located at 46°49'44" North, 100°53'28" West (46.828893, -100.891138). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.7 km² (10.3 mi²). 26.4 km² (10.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.07% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 16,718 people, 6,647 households, and 4,553 families residing in the city. The population density is 634.1/km² (1,642.8/mi²). There are 6,958 housing units at an average density of 263.9/km² (683.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.98% White, 0.20% African American, 3.02% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. The top 6 ancestry groups in the city are German (61.3%), Norwegian (15.4%), Russian (13.1%), Irish (7.9%), English (4.2%), United States (2.9%). There are 6,647 households out of which 35.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 26.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.01. In the city the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $38,182, and the median income for a family is $46,210. Males have a median income of $31,653 versus $21,400 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,509. 10.0% of the population and 7.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.2% of those under the age of 18 and 13.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
