Malden, New York

Malden (or Malden-on-Hudson) is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Ulster County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 413. The community of Malden is in the eastern part of the Town of Saugerties north of the Village of Saugerties.

Geography

The community is on the west bank of the Hudson River. Malden is located at 42°5'36" North, 73°56'5" West (42.093279, -73.934804). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 413 people, 153 households, and 106 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 312.7/km² (813.3/mi²). There are 174 housing units at an average density of 131.7/km² (342.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 93.95% White, 1.94% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.45% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. 4.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 153 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.32. In the CDP the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.0 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $43,438, and the median income for a family is $41,250. Males have a median income of $33,558 versus $18,333 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $17,962. 5.5% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 27.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
