Main-tauber

Main-Tauber is a district (Kreis) in the north-east of Baden-Wrttemberg, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from north-west clockwise) Miltenberg, Main-Spessart, Wrzburg, Neustadt (Aisch)-Bad Windsheim and Ansbach (all in Bavaria), and the districts Schwbisch Hall, Hohenlohekreis and Neckar-Odenwald.

History

The district was created in 1973 by merging the districts Bad Mergentheim, Tauberbischofsheim and parts of the district Buchen. At first it was called Tauberkreis, in 1974 it was renamed to its current name Main-Tauber-Kreis.

Geography

The name of the district already names the two main rivers. The Main forms the northern boundary of the district, while its affluent Tauber flows through the district from southeast to north. The north of the district covers part of the Spessart mountains, while the southern area is called Bauland.

Coat of arms

Coat of arms |The coat of arms show the symbols of the three historical states which ruled the area of the district. The biggest part of the district was part of the clerical state of Wrzburg, the line with the three peaks as the symbol of Franconia represents this. The wheel in top is the symbol of the clerical state of Mainz, the cross is the symbol of the Teutonic Order.
