Mahopac, New York

Mahopac is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in the Town of Carmel in Putnam County, New York. As of the 2000 census, it had a total population of 8,478. Mahopac is located on US Route 6 by Mahopac Lake. The largest population center in the township, Mahopac is the seat of the Carmel Town Hall, while the hamlet of Carmel is the seat of the county government. Lake Mahopac was once an important summer resort area. Mahopac is also a school district covering the part of the township not in the Carmel Central School District. There are post offices for both Mahopac (10541) and Mahopac Falls (10549).

Geography

Mahopac is located at 41°22'11" North, 73°44'15" West (41.369657, -73.737463). According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 16.7 km² (6.4 mi²). 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is land and 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.57% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 8,478 people, 2,922 households, and 2,258 families residing in the hamlet. The population density is 617.6/km² (1,600.7/mi²). There are 3,099 housing units at an average density of 225.8/km² (585.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 94.31% White, 1.06% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.92% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 6.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,922 households out of which 37.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.6% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% are non-families. 17.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.28. In the hamlet the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.7 males. The median income for a household in the community is $70,172, and the median income for a family is $78,091. Males have a median income of $52,315 versus $36,419 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $29,245. 3.8% of the population and 1.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.8% of those under the age of 18 and 10.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
