The county was formed on September 30, 1836 and named for James Madison, President of the United States. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,168 km² (837 mi²). 2,167 km² (837 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water. There are 6,537 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.94% White, 0.11% Black or African American, 1.22% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 1.47% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 3.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,463 households out of which 33.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.00% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.30% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.03. In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older.
