Macquarie Street, Sydney, is the most eastern street of Sydney's CBD. Extending from Hyde Park at its southern end to the Sydney Opera House at its northern end, Macquarie Street is arguably Australia's most beautiful and prominent avenue. Macquarie Street is named after an early Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie (1810-1821). Regarded by many to be the "Father of Australia", it was Macquarie who saw Sydney as a permanent settlement of the British Empire rather than a mere penal colony. He commanded the construction of Sydney's first public buildings of any real permanence and set the boundaries of Sydney's grid of streets. Accordingly, Macquarie Street is the location of Sydney Hospital, the Hyde Park Barracks and St. James Church, all Macquarie projects. Today, Macquarie Street is also the location of the Houses of Parliament of New South Wales, the State Library of New South Wales and the Reserve Bank of Australia. Part of the street is bounded by the Botanical Gardens, location of Government House.
