Macon County, Illinois

Macon County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 114,706. Its county seat is Decatur, Illinois6. Because of its location, Macon County is often referred to as "The Heart of Illinois". However, it's not actually in the center of the state.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,516 km² (585 mi²). 1,504 km² (581 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.83% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 114,706 people, 46,561 households, and 30,963 families residing in the county. The population density is 76/km² (198/mi²). There are 50,241 housing units at an average density of 33/km² (86/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.48% White, 14.06% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 46,561 households out of which 29.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.70% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.50% are non-families. 28.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.93. In the county the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $37,859, and the median income for a family is $47,493. Males have a median income of $39,107 versus $22,737 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,067. 12.90% of the population and 9.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.00% of those under the age of 18 and 8.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
