Mackinac Island is a city located on Mackinac Island in Mackinac County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 523.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.5 km² (5.6 mi²). 11.3 km² (4.4 mi²) of it is land and 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.86% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 523 people, 252 households, and 143 families residing in the city. The population density is 46.2/km² (119.8/mi²). There are 565 housing units at an average density of 49.9/km² (129.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.72% White, 0.00% African American, 18.36% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 5.35% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 252 households out of which 23.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.4% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% are non-families. 36.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.08 and the average family size is 2.69. In the city the population is spread out with 18.0% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 34.4% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 109.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $36,964, and the median income for a family is $50,536. Males have a median income of $39,219 versus $25,313 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,965. 3.5% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.1% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
