Lysander CutlerLysander Cutler (February 16, 1807 – July 30, 1866) was a businessman, educator, politician, and a Union Army general during the American Civil War. Cutler was born in Royalston, Massachusetts in 1807. He worked as a businessman, educator, and politician before the outbreak of the Civil War. He commanded the Sixth Wisconsin infantry regiment and subsequently achieved brigade and division command in the Army of the Potomac, including temporary command of the famous "Iron Brigade." He was wounded at the Second Battle of Bull Run, but later recovered. He was appointed brigadier general of volunteers on November 29, 1862 and was later brevetted a major general. At the Battle of Gettysburg, he commanded the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, of I Corps of the Army of the Potomac. He later commanded the 4th Division of the V Corps. Cutler was wounded at the Battle of Globe Tavern in August, 1864, eventually dying of those wounds in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1866 and is buried in Forest Home Cemetery.
