Lumpkin, Georgia

Lumpkin is a city located in Stewart County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,369. The city is the county seat of Stewart County.

Geography

Lumpkin is located at 32°2'59" North, 84°47'45" West (32.049638, -84.795859). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.25% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,369 people, 552 households, and 367 families residing in the city. The population density is 332.4/km² (862.2/mi²). There are 621 housing units at an average density of 150.8/km² (391.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 28.85% White, 70.42% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 552 households out of which 29.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.4% are married couples living together, 26.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.08. In the city the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $22,315, and the median income for a family is $27,321. Males have a median income of $22,422 versus $20,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,146. 26.7% of the population and 24.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.7% of those under the age of 18 and 18.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
