Luis Hernndez

Luis Hernndez (born December 22, 1968 in Poza, Mexico) is a Mexican soccer player, the all-time leading goalscorer for the Mexican national team. Hernndez, nicknamed El Matador, burst onto the world scene during 1997 Copa America, scoring six goals to lead the tournament in scoring. He was once again at the top of his game at the 1998 World Cup, finishing among the competition's top scorers with four goals. The 35 goals (in 85 caps) he scored for Mexico tie him with Carlos Hermosillo as the nation's all-time leading goalscorer. Hernndez also played in the 2002 World Cup, but failed to get a goal. In Mexico, Hernndez played with a number of clubs, including Cruz Azul, Monterrey, Necaxa, America, Tigres, Veracruz, and Chiapas, and was twice named Mexico's player of the year (1997, 1998). But it is Hernndez's failure at the club level outside his country that is noteworthy. Signed by Argentine giants Boca Juniors after the 1997 Copa America, he failed to break into the first team and went back to Necaxa. Then, in 2000, Major League Soccer thought they scored a coup when they paid a reported $4 million for Hernndez. Thought to tear the league apart (and help at the gate), El Matador was a colossal failure in his two seasons with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He scored just 17 goals in 40 regular season and playoff games, a much smaller number than was expected, and a desired rise of attendance was not seen as well. Hernndez went back to Mexico for good in 2002. Hernandez, Luis Hernandez, Luis
