Lubbock is named for Thomas Saltus Lubbock, a Confederate colonel and Texas Ranger. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,333 km² (901 mi²). 2,330 km² (899 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water. There are 100,595 housing units at an average density of 43/km² (112/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 74.30% White, 7.67% Black or African American, 0.59% Native American, 1.31% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 14.15% from other races, and 1.96% from two or more races. 27.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 92,516 households out of which 31.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.20% are married couples living together, 12.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.00% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.10. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 16.30% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 19.20% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $32,198, and the median income for a family is $41,067. Males have a median income of $29,961 versus $21,591 for females.
