Lonhro

Lonhro was a champion Australian racehorse of the early 2000s. Foaled in 1998, he closely resembled his sire Octagonal in looks and style of racing. Trained by John Hawkes, and ridden by Darren Beadman for the most part, he won a total of 11 Group One races, including the Caulfield Guineas (2001), Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2003) and Australian Cup (2004). Disappointments of his career included his failure to win a Cox Plate despite starting as favourite on two occasions, and his last start defeat in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes when poorly ridden by Beadman. His most famous victory was the 2004 Australian Cup, where he received a severe check in the straight, yet still managed to charge home to win by a nose. He was retired to stud in 2004, and is standing alongside his father Octagonal at the famous Woodlands Stud where he was born. He is a full brother to Group One winner Niello.
